GOVERNING BODY CLERK

12 Hours Per Week – Permanent
Term Time Only

Salary: Grade – E SCP19 £5,231 – SCP23 £5,935

Located At: Shirley House, 5 Oldham Street, Hyde, SK14 1LJ

You will join a team of colleagues who provide a professional and supportive clerking service to school Governing Boards. Your working hours will be split between attending your allocated schools’ Governing Board meetings, which are held at the schools usually in the evenings with your remaining hours spent in the Governor Effectiveness Office typing up Agendas and Minutes of meetings and liaising with schools and Chair of Governors. Hours spent in the office can be worked flexibly including working from home. Use of a car is essential as you will need to travel to and from a school, and some meetings may finish late in the evenings.

The evening schedule of a Governing Body meeting is generally from 6.00 pm or 7.00 pm through to 9.30 pm or 10.00 pm, which can impact on a clerk’s return to their home and requires careful thought about proximity to the school and the implications for timing and travelling calculations. Occasionally, meetings may start at 9.00 am or 4.00 pm and may last for approximately 2 – 3 hours.

You need to have sound administration and communication skills (both written and oral) together with IT skills which would enable you to clerk meetings with varied and extensive agendas. Knowledge of the current school system is needed for you to fully take up your role as a clerk to governors. Effective time management skills and ability to use emails and the internet are essential. You will be provided with a laptop computer.

Regular training and support in all areas is provided through a programme of team meetings, training days and personal development programmes which you are required to attend, (the schedule of which is already set in place) so that all clerks are in a position to advise on the interpretation of regulations relating to school governing bodies.

A fully supportive mentoring and training programme is implemented for those newly appointed. All our current clerks are professionally trained and any new employees would be required to undertake this.

Additional hours may be available for clerking ad hoc meetings as may be required.

This post is a designated customer facing role under the fluency duty and requires a specified level of spoken English in the person specification.

This post requires an enhanced DBS Disclosure.

Please contact Lorayne Cooksey – Governor Effectiveness and Support on 0161 342 3206 to discuss any queries you may have about the role and to discuss the hours / meeting arrangements.
